Fashion week always springs up enthusiasm, an air of adventure and anticipation among the fashionistas who get dressed to the nines and fight for the front rows. Buyers, socialites, journos and the pr guys are seen hankering for attention amidst air kissing, champagne guzzling and stall stroll banter. And how! And Lakme Fashion week at Mumbai this time saw lot of international fashion divas making it at the front row. When Suzy Menkes gives a positive review in International Herald Tribune about an Indian fashion show, it really shows that we are actually somewhere on the fashion spectrum if not exactly on the top. Clad in a mauve coloured coat and her signature mohawk-Suzy noted down points meticulously on a piece of paper while cautiously looking at every outfit as each model walked out.
I attended designers Sonam Dobal and Kiran Uttam Ghosh's shows and I must say both of them were stunning. Rich in colours and textures-they were a visual treat! Olive green(one of my favourites) is one colour that has found favour with almost every designer. There are lot of kaftans, tunics, shirt dresses and focus is on textures and layerings. Considering that fashion week was about Fall 2008, the collections seemed more on the side of spring summer. May be because Mumbai has no winters.
Fashion week also witnessed a lot of new talent. Everyone gushed about designer Kallol Datta and his take on goth. Among the new designers I liked the label Stae from Kolkatta and their play with a painter's brush strokes.
All in all fashion week was good fun with designers' focus on both the conceptual and wearable dressing!
